Archivists have their day time in the sun

On the surface, the job associated with an archivist looks so routine and monotonous that nobody pays much attention to all of them. However , archivists play a huge role within society, as has become highlighted with a recent news item announcing the starting of an inquest into the Hillsborough disaster of 1989. We am not discussing this kind of news item to boost my personal ego or those of my colleagues, but just to make the general public understand that while archivists often are likely to be taken with no consideration, our operate has tremendous value for the world.

The Hillsborough catastrophe is one of the most detrimental disasters in British showing off history, through which more than ninety five lives were lost and there were scores of injuries. The opening of an inquest into this catastrophe could be made possible due to tireless job of a selection of archivists whose job was to catalogue and make available over 450, 500 documents relating to that tragic incident. The task of these archivists, alongside those of the Hillsborough Independent -panel, uncovered terrible truths which in turn had been protected up for many years.

While reading through the report published by the panel, I was filled with shame to understand how ignorant I was with what had actually transpired throughout this disaster. The typical thought that was ingrained in our heads since childhood was that it was the Liverpool fans all over themselves who were responsible for the disaster that had befallen them. Acquired I matured in the north part of city, I’m sure I would personally have not been so uninformed, but living in the southern region, I was swaddled from the real truth and sometimes even put through deliberate misinformation available in the media at that time.

Due to work with the archivists, the Independent Panel for the first time experienced access to unaltered, unedited, original records, while previously the only records available were the ones that had been intensely edited using a particular bias in mind. Although it is true that almost all written records incorporate some inherent biases based on the views or perhaps beliefs of the writer, these kinds of biases usually are subconscious and incredibly different from a deliberate attempt to purge or perhaps edit records in such a way concerning cast aspersions on the activities of only 1 party, without giving virtually any heed to the bigger picture.

Given quite role played out by archivists in world, it is imperative that we hold high honest standards ” that we constantly report facts as they had been and not end up being bribed or perhaps browbeaten into supporting a particular version of events. While it is not really unusual to take this kind of ethical standard to get archivists with no consideration, there is always that remote opportunity that somebody could tamper with the records in return for economic or political gain. This might seem far-fetched but I am sure examples can be found of archivists who have misbehaved in this way!
