A great Indian Woman In Guatemala: Without A Trace Of Bitterness In Her Voice
Stacye Rothbard
Transcultural perspectives
November 11, mil novecentos e noventa e seis
Guatemala may be the land of Eternal Spring suspensions and the house of the richly cultured
and
historic Mayan people. That it also the region of Rigoberta Menchu, a great
illeterite plantation worker, converted voice of oppressed persons everywhere.
Guatemala
also has the sad differentiation of being residence to Latina Americas oldest civil
warfare.
For more than 30 years, left-wing guerrillas have battled a series
of
rightist government authorities in Guatemala. The conflict has murdered an estimated 140, 000 in
the country, that has 11 mil people. (N. Y. Instances June 14, 1996 pA4
col 2)
This is a tale of a people in problems, and one womans fight to use truth
as
a method of placing her persons free.
Almost all of the population will be Indians, and much of the struggles arise
away
of the ashes of the previous. Spain conquered Guatemala in 1524, that was the
start of the oppression with the native people of Guatemala. Since this period
the
local people have been ruled by Spanish speaking minority, the Ladinos
most of which are originated from the Spanish colonists.
Beginning in 1954, when Guatemalas elected government was overthrown by the
army, the military commenced a challenging war resistant to the Indian people. This type of
pain and oppression continued, and during the 1972s the clampdown, dominance was
specifically harsh, during this time period more and more Indians began to withstand. It
was during this time that Rigoberta Menchus family became involved in the
amount of resistance.
The situation in Guatemala is just like South Africa, where black
vast majority
are dominated with absolute power by white community. Like S. africa, the
Indians in Guatemala are lacking in even the most elementary of human being rights.
Without a doubt the alleged forest Indians are becoming systematically
exterminated in
the name of progress. Although unlike the Indian rebels of the previous, who planned to
go back to pre-Columbian times, Rigoberta Menchu is definitely not preventing in the term
of
an idealized or perhaps mythical past. (Menchu xiii) Rigoberta is working
toward
drawing attention to the plight of native persons around the globe.
Once an illiterate farm staff member, she has taught herself to read and write
Spanish
the language of her oppressor, as a means of relating her tale to the universe.
She tells the story of her your life with credibility and integrity in hopes of
impressing upon the world the indignation in the oppressed. Moreover to
the
Spanish terminology, Rigoberta borrows such things as the bible and trade union
organization in order to use them against their first owners. There exists
nothing like the bible in her lifestyle. She says, The Bible is usually written
and
that gives all of us one more tool. ( Menchu xviii ) Her people need to base
their
actions on the laws and regulations that come down from the previous, on prediction.
Her own history and the history of her family is advised with superb detail in
the
publication I, Rigoberta Menchu. Besides one learn about the culture of her
people and about the city in which she lives, but the understanding is
gained as to impetus to react against ones oppressor. Born the sixth kid to
an already destitute but well respected family, Rigoberta remembers
growing
in the mountains about land that no one different wanted, spending months for a
time
going with her family to work on the fincas (plantations).
A lorry owned by finca might come with their village, plus the workers
along
with their kids and animals, would trip together, in filthy and
overcrowded
circumstances. Each van would keep approximately fourty people, plus the trip to
the finca took two night times and 1 day, with no ceases allowed for the
bathroom
you can actually imagine the detrimental condition that resulted. Each worker
would
take with these people a cup and a plate and a bottle of wine for water when they worked in
the
fields. The youngest of the children that had been not yet capable of work experienced no
will need
for their very own cup and plate seeing that, if they did not job, they would not be
given
by the casa. These kids mothers would share with these people their own bout
of tortilla and coffee beans, though most of the children had been severely
malnourished
and a pair of Rigobertas individual brothers died while on the finca.
On the tender associated with eight Rigoberta was making profits to help her family
and
as proof of her personal fortitude, by age eight she was picking the quotas
of
an adult and was paid out as such. Her first encounter in the metropolis was at a dozen
years old in the capital of Guatemala in which she performed as a maid. She
