When it comes to Ethan Frome, to battle the quiet, isolation, and loneliness in his life, he marries women who is dissimilar to him, names Zenobia Pierce following his mom’s death. When Ethan desires to leave their house town of Starkfield, his new new bride will never leave and evolves into a great oppressively muted hypochondriac in order to gain her husbands attention. Ethan is unable to break free from the mind-numbing captivity of his farm, and so there will be zero hope for Ethan. The moral landscape of Starkfield gives no payoff and no fresh life. For that reason Ethan must live out his days surrounded by the aspects of a tough and indifferent nature, and harsh and emotionally abgefahren surroundings of the loveless marriage.

For Ethan, the break free he recognizes from the cold, the silence, the solitude, and the isolation of his life, can be his name on the headstone in the Frome’s graveyard. The motif of stop is contrasting to the motif of seclusion of person from his fellow men. The solitude of each persona before the misfortune is certainly not self-imposed, yet is forced upon these people by outside the house circumstances.

Ethan tried to avoid the isolation of Starkfield and his father’s farm by simply going away to college in Worcester. After that his father’s death brought him to the farm. There are several significant phrases within the novel that signify the silence and isolation these three character types live in, which includes: “A dead cucumber-vine suspends from the patio like the crape streamer linked with the door for a death…. ” (Wharton, 51) In this particular phrase, the narrator offers portrayed Ethan looking for a solution of his marriage and isolated existence, even if that by imagining his wife’s possible death, without him having to choose. The narrator refers to “hemlock-shaded lane, exactly where Ethan’s sawmill glommed overnight and away again into the comparative clearness of the fields” (Wharton, 48), in this paragraph alone, I get a great imagery of death and loneliness without the hope for tomorrow.
