Irving Layton uses metaphor in his essay. ‘books have become objects of attention; like an atomic pile, some thing heard about although never seen'(p145) This phrase lets people relate with all the point that author is attempting to obtain across to the reader. You now has a mental reference point or link to what is being described therefore he can now better understand what he is reading. This stylistic device is used effectively in this essay. ‘Knowledge spills over like a normal water from a seemingly endless fountain. ‘(p146) This is a good use of imagery. By applying this information of endless knowledge to a fountain or waterfall someone can make a mental picture better allowing him to comprehend exactly what the author is attempting to discribe.
It is very hard to understand what endless know-how would be like, so the creator puts a photo of a fountain spewing expertise forever, producing the idea even more plausible for the reader. The author did not employ too many stylistic devices to prove his point. The few which were used just made the reality easier to grasp. The composition was based on opinion plus the writer, utilized very relevant topics to get his point across and make the reader sympathetic to his sights. The dissertation was very effective because it used many relevant topics and ideas.
